Retro Future: Creatures of the Wind, Fall 2013

Creatures of the Wind’s retro-futurism for Fall 2013

In the relatively short span of time that Shane Gabier and Chris Peters of Creatures of the Wind have been showing at New York Fashion Week, they have lassoed the attention of many a fashion editor – not to mention the CFDA, which made them a runner-up in the 2011 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards.

Much has been made of CotW’s valiant attempts to inject the commercial into their oddball, craft-focused vision – not an easy leap to make, it turns out. And while some critics may bemoan a perceived loss of magic in favor of accessibility in their Fall 2013 collection, it seems to me that Gabier and Peters are playing their hand just right. These guys are not selling out. They are simply refining, listening, and ensuring their spot on the runways for years to come.

The clothes mashed up 70s eclecticism with a 50s rockabilly vibe, plus a dash of 40s zoot suit riot thrown in for a good measure. If some looks were unabashedly retro geek, many others offered up plenty of arty futuro-cool to diversify the mood. Especially delectable were the structured shifts and slipdresses patterned with bright prints inspired by Ettore Sottsass and his Memphis Group of postmodern artists and designers.
