We’ll Eat You Up, We Love You So!

wild thing FW10

Wolf headdress and socks by Topshop Unique, shirts and leggings by Helmut Lang

This was originally published in May of 2010. We are posting again today to honor the life of Maurice Sendak, who gave so much joy to children of all ages for so many years.

Wild things ran rampant on the Fall/Winter 2010 runways, gnashing their terrible teeth and showing their terrible claws.  Wolves in particular made a striking appearance at Helmut Lang in New York and again at Topshop Unique’s woodland romp in London. I’m a sucker for wolves, as many of those closest to me can attest, so I simply had to mash up Emma Cook’s fabulously feral animal headdresses for Unique with Lang’s antithesis of the traditional wolf-howling-at-the-full-moon hippie shirt to create a true Where the Wild Things Are moment.

I’ve been lusting for just such a redemptive moment since the letdown that was the Spike Jonze/Dave Eggers  film adaptation of Sendak’s classic picture book last year.  I’ve rarely been so excited about and summarily disappointed by a film. Oh, would that it had lived up to its wrenching Arcade Fire-laden trailer!

My man’s been after me for a few months now to make him a wolf suit to perform, relax, and generally prowl about in. Perhaps we all need something vaguely ferocious to wear on occasion, for those times when our animal instincts ought to be allowed to beat out our heady humanness. Our wild child, savage here in her Helmut Lang/Unique wolf suit, proves that theorem as she sets sail through night and day and in and out of weeks, all the while practicing her trick of looking into our eyes without blinking once.
