Mad World

The long wait is over for Season 5…and we’ve officially entered the late 60s with the women and men of Mad Men. Op art now graces the walls of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce where Rothko’s abstract impressionist multiforms once hung. Mary Quant has begun to work her hemline-shrinking magic on forward-thinking birds like Megan, Don’s new wife, and boundary-pushing Peggy. The Dolly Birds have flown the coop!

Hence my imaginings of the madwomen of Mad Men in ’66esque garb – by way of the 2011/12 collections, which were populated with a plethora of Swinging 60s silhouettes and patterns. Just as the indomitable Ms. Prada, along with Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton, spearheaded the Mad Men-induced hourglass craze on the runway in 2010, so again in 2011 did she move in step with the transformation of the Madladies into late 60s modern women.

Betty, Joan and Peggy enter the late 60s via the 2011/21 runways

Betty wears a dress by Peter Som (SS12) and booties by Dolce & Gabbana (SS12). Joan wears dress, scarf (Resort 12) and boots (FW11) by Prada. Peggy wears dress by Prada (FW11) and shoes by Jonathan Saunders (Pre-Fall 12).

Betty’s svelte shape belies the reality of Season 5’s Tea Leaves episode – but let us rest assured that January Jones simply cannot remain so forever. As for Joan, it’s clear that the curves I provided fall well short…but I tried, really I did. :)
